IHRM membership requires academic qualifications, HR professional qualifications and HR working experience. The minimum academic qualification is a Diploma in HR or a first degree with a Higher Diploma in HR, coupled with HR working experience as outlined in the membership categories below.

To become a member of IHRM, apply online and key in all the required documents through the Member Portal: members.ihrm.or.ke/signin. All your certificates must be certified. Your application will be processed and you will be notified of the outcome within two weeks.

There are three categories of IHRM membership:

  • Associate Member – an entry level for holders of a first degree or diploma in HRM whose HR working experience is below 5 years.
  • Full Member – for holders of a first degree or masters plus an HR professional qualification and a minimum of 5 years working experience.
  • Fellow Member – for Full Members with a minimum of 15 years of HR working experience who have made a substantial contribution to the growth of the HR profession in Kenya.

It takes a maximum of 1–2 weeks from the time you complete your online application on the Membership Portal: members.ihrm.or.ke/signin.

IHRM no longer has a student membership category. However, students who have graduated can apply for IHRM membership for consideration at the Associate Member category.

You can pay your membership fee by:

  • Depositing into the Institute's account – ABSA Bank, Haile Selassie Branch, A/C No. 1498910.
  • Or through M-PESA Pay Bill number 355050 (Account number: your membership number, or five zeros “00000” if you are a new member).
  • Advocacy – IHRM champions members’ interests, shaping policies and upholding professional standards.
  • Recognition – Members gain professional esteem and titles, showcasing dedication to HR excellence.
  • Networking – Attend exclusive events for peer, thought leader and employer connections.
  • Mentorship – Engage with experienced HR professionals for guidance and knowledge transfer.
  • Development – Access continuous learning through webinars, forums and training sessions.
  • Career Support – Receive job referrals and recommendations, affirming institute compliance.
  • Community Impact – Participate in outreach and social initiatives through IHRM branches.
  • Legal Assistance – Obtain advice on regulations and employment laws for informed decisions.
  • Updates – Stay informed on industry news and legislative changes via IHRM publications.
  • Perks – Enjoy exclusive discounts on products or services through IHRM partnerships.
  • Recognition Programs – Acknowledgment for outstanding HR achievements, fostering excellence.

You risk termination of your employment because you would not be abiding by the Human Resource Management Professionals (HRMP) Act (Sections 40 and 41), which requires one to be a member of IHRM.

To obtain a Practicing Certificate, first download the Practicing Certificate application form, complete it and send it via membership@ihrm.or.ke or to the IHRM offices, together with an application fee of KES 1,000. Your application will be processed and you will be notified of the outcome within two weeks.
